Screen and filter
The Research terminal is GNG Research's stock and ETF screener. It scans a universe of roughly 5,600 listed securities against more than 250 financial, valuation, dividend, growth, technical, and sentiment metrics, plus GNG Research's own ratings. You choose the columns you want to see, set filters on any of them, sort the result, and read the matching companies in a fast scrolling table. This page explains what the screener shows, the controls you set, and how the result is produced. The page is open to Free, Pro Lite, and Pro accounts. Access is gated at the column level, not the page level: a large core column set is available to every tier, and a large premium set requires the Pro plan.
Before you begin
- Sign in. The screener loads for any signed-in account.
- Decide what you want to find: a value, dividend, growth, quality, momentum, or quant screen all run on the same surface.
- To screen with the GNG proprietary scores as columns, to use larger page sizes, or to export, use a Pro account. Free and Pro Lite see the identical core column set.
Quickstart
Open the Research terminal
Open the Research terminal from the main navigation. The table loads with a default set of columns: symbol, company name, sector, last close, market cap, P/E, and the GNG rating columns where your tier has access.
Narrow the list with search
Type a symbol, company name, or sector into the search bar to jump to or narrow the list. An exact symbol match is pushed to the top of the first page.
Set filters
Select Filters to open Advanced Filters. Pick a category, set a range or a numeric minimum and maximum (for example, dividend yield at least 3), or choose values from a list (for example, Sector is Technology), then select Apply Filters.
Choose columns
Select Columns to choose which metrics appear. Search or browse by category, check the ones you want, and select Apply. Drag to reorder them if you like.
Sort the result
Select any column header to sort by it. Select it again to reverse the direction.
Open a company
Select a row to open that company's full research page in a new tab.
Optional: save or export
Select Create View to save the current filters, columns, and sort so you can reload the exact screen later. On Pro, select Export to download the result as CSV, Excel, or PDF.
What it shows
The screener is a data-table tool, not a charting tool. Its single visualization surface is the results table.
Results table
A wide, horizontally scrollable grid. Each row is one security and each column is a metric you selected. The left Symbol column stays pinned while you scroll sideways, so you always know which row is which. Read it left to right per company, and sort by any header to rank the whole list. Color is used sparingly as a reading aid: the discount-to-fair-value reading shows green when the price is below estimated fair value and red when above, and the PEGY column tints by how rich or cheap the ratio is.
Summary row
An optional summary row sits under the header. It shows the sum, average, median, or count you enabled for each numeric column, recomputed over the rows currently loaded.
Count line
A count line reports how much of the matched universe is loaded, in the form "Showing X of Y companies."
A separate mobile layout renders the same table on phones with a synced sticky header and touch scrolling. It presents the identical data.
Inputs
The controls below build and refine the screen.
Search bar
Free text that matches a partial symbol, company name, or sector, case-insensitive. An exact symbol match is prioritized to the top. Default: empty. A Request button inside the search bar lets you ask GNG Research to add a ticker that is not yet covered.
Portfolio selector
A dropdown next to the search bar. It restricts the table to the exact holdings of one of your own portfolios, or a combined set of several portfolios at once. Selecting a portfolio applies a symbol filter, and clearing it returns to the full universe. This works for both manually tracked portfolios and securely connected brokerage portfolios. Default: none selected.
Filters (Advanced Filters)
The Filters button opens a filter builder organized into category tabs: Company Profile, GNG Scores, Fundamentals, Quality and Health, Growth and Value, Dividends and Capital, and Market and Technical. An Active tab gathers every filter you currently have set, and a search box inside the builder finds any filter by name. Each filter is one of four input types.
- Range filters apply to any numeric metric, such as market cap, P/E, dividend yield, ROIC, margins, growth rates, and technical readings. Controls are a dual-handle slider, separate min and max number boxes, and an Exclude N/A values checkbox that drops companies missing the metric. The slider bounds and a live-range hint come from the current dataset's real minimum and maximum. Leaving a side blank means no bound on that side. Default: unset.
- Multi-select filters apply to categorical fields, such as Sector, Industry, Exchange, Country, Currency, Asset Type, the rating fields, Earnings Metric Used, Dividend Pay Months, and the sentiment labels. Each opens a searchable checklist with Select All and Clear. Selecting several values returns companies matching any of them. Default: none selected, which shows all values. Asset Type defaults to both Stock and ETF selected, which behaves as no filter.
- Date filters apply to date fields, such as dividend date, ex-dividend date, earnings dates, and latest quarter. Controls are a from date box, a to date box, and exclude-N/A. Default: unset.
- Text filters apply to free-text fields with no preset value list. The control is a contains keyword box. Default: empty.
A dedicated Symbol filter limits results to a specific list of tickers, narrowing the universe to only those symbols.
Custom column filters
Beyond the curated filter cards, you can add a filter on any column in the dataset: pick a column, then enter a min or max range or a contains text value. Each one shows the live minimum, maximum, and average for that column as a hint.
Filter presets
A few one-click starting points seed filter values you can then adjust, for example a value preset for low PEGY, an income preset for higher dividend yield, a quality preset for low debt-to-equity with a healthy current ratio, and a growth preset for higher ROIC and growth.
Columns (Column Selector)
The Columns button opens a selector with two tabs.
- The Edit tab browses metrics by category or searches all columns by name. It shows a running count of selected against selectable columns, and offers Select All (within the current view), Deselect All (keeps only Symbol), All (selects every accessible column), and Reset (returns to the default set). For each selected numeric column, you can tick Sum, Avg, Median, or Count to turn on a summary.
- The Reorder tab lets you drag selected columns into left-to-right order. Symbol is locked to the first position.
Columns above your tier appear with a lock marker and are not selectable. A footer banner shows how many premium metrics are locked, with a link to view plans.
Per page
A dropdown above the table sets how many rows load per page. The options depend on your tier. Free and Pro Lite can choose 50 or 100, Pro adds 250, and higher tiers add larger sizes. Default: 100. More rows load automatically as you scroll.
Sort
Select any sortable column header to sort ascending, and again for descending. Rating-style columns sort in their natural good-to-bad order rather than alphabetically. A stable secondary sort by symbol keeps paging consistent. Default sort: symbol, ascending.
Export and Google Sheets
On Pro, the Export menu downloads the filtered, sorted result as CSV, Excel, or PDF, with only your tier-allowed columns. A Google Sheets button opens the result in a connected sheet, available on Pro and above.
Views
Views opens your saved screens and GNG Research's shared global views to load, copy, rename, or delete. Create View saves the current configuration. For the full flow, see the saved-views detail under How screen results are produced.
Data dictionary
A Data dictionary link opens a reference that defines every metric in plain language. It is available without a subscription. See Data dictionary.
Outputs and how to read them
Each row is one security. Each cell is one metric, formatted to its natural unit: currency, percent, ratio, plain number, market-cap shorthand such as 1.2T or 340B, or a date. Missing values show as N/A.
- Read a company across its row, left to right, then compare companies down a column.
- Sort by the column that matters most for your screen to rank the whole matched list, not only the visible page.
- The summary row gives a quick read on the loaded set: the average yield of your income screen, or the median P/E of your value screen, for example.
- The proprietary GNG columns (Safety, Quality, the valuation Rating, the GNG Quant score and rating, the blended Fair Value and its discount, and the buy-zone and trim prices) are read as a starting filter and a relative ranking. For how to interpret each, see Ratings overview and Fair value and valuation.
How it is calculated
The screener applies your filters as conditions on the universe, sorts the matches, and renders the columns you chose. Filters combine with AND across fields and with OR among the values inside one multi-select. The standard columns are conventional finance and technical measures whose meaning is what any finance reference would give. The GNG proprietary columns are GNG Research's own models, described by what they measure and how to read them, not by formula. For the full sequence and the proprietary-wall detail, see How screen results are produced.
Data and timing
The universe is one consolidated, regularly refreshed row of metrics per security. Source data comes from AlphaVantage for prices and fundamentals, Nasdaq quotes delivered through AlphaVantage, and public company filings from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission sourced through EDGAR, enriched with GNG Research's own computed metrics and ratings. Most figures refresh once per trading day, largely daily for fundamentals, so the table reflects the latest processed snapshot rather than live intraday values.
Use cases
- Value screening: filter for low PEGY or P/E, a meaningful discount to fair value, and a strong Safety or Quality score, then sort by discount to surface the cheapest quality names.
- Dividend and income screening: filter for a minimum dividend yield, a sustainable payout ratio, a positive dividend-growth rate, and a pay-month pattern that fits your cash-flow needs.
- Quality and quant screening: combine high ROIC, low leverage, a high Piotroski F-Score, and a strong GNG Quant rating into a quality shortlist.
- Momentum and technical screening: filter on multi-month returns, RSI, MACD posture, or distance from the 52-week high, then export the list.
- Portfolio review: point the screener at your own portfolio's holdings and lay out any columns you like to audit valuation, safety, and momentum across everything you own at once.
Limitations and disclosures
Data refreshes on a schedule, largely daily for fundamentals, so figures reflect the latest processed snapshot rather than live intraday values. Summary statistics are computed over the rows currently loaded, not necessarily the entire matched universe. Free and Pro Lite see the core column set only: the premium metrics, the proprietary GNG scores as columns, larger page sizes, and export require Pro or higher. Screening surfaces candidates and rankings, it does not make recommendations. This tool surfaces ratings, fair value estimates, and buy-zone prices that read as guidance, so it carries the disclosure below.
GNG Research provides equity research and educational tools, not investment advice. Nothing on the platform is a recommendation to buy or sell any security. Do your own research and consider your circumstances before making any investment decision.
