Create a skill
This page walks through the skill editor field by field, then shows the alternative path: asking the built-in Skill Designer to draft a skill with you. A skill is a reusable instruction package you invoke with a slash command. You can build one two ways: write it yourself in the editor, or ask Skill Designer to draft it. Creating a skill is available on every plan, with a per-plan limit on how many you can save.
Before you begin
- Sign in and open the AI Console. Skills are managed on the Skills surface, opened from the console sidebar. See Skills.
- You can save skills up to your plan's limit. The Skills surface shows your saved count against your limit.
Steps
Open the skill editor
Open Skills from the console sidebar and select New skill.
Enter a name
Enter a Name of up to 120 characters. This is the readable title shown in your list and in the composer picker.
Confirm the slug
Confirm the Slug. It is suggested from the name and becomes the slash command you type (
/your-slug). A slug is 3 to 64 characters using lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens, and it starts and ends with a letter or number. A few reserved words, such as the built-in command words, are rejected with an inline message.Write the description
Write the Description, up to 2,000 characters. This is what the assistant reads to decide how the skill applies, and what you see in the picker. State what the skill does and when to use it.
Write the instructions
Write the Instructions, up to 24,000 characters. These are the full working instructions the assistant follows when the skill is invoked. A counter warns as you pass the comfortable length, because when the assistant loads the skill for you very long instructions can be trimmed.
Save the skill
Leave Enabled on and save. The skill appears in your list and in the composer picker.
Try it in chat
Select Use in chat on the new skill, finish the message, and send.
Write a strong skill
- Write the description around the decision: what the skill produces and when it applies.
- Put the repeatable steps and format rules in the instructions, not the description.
- Keep one job per skill. Two jobs make two skills.
Ask Skill Designer instead
Start Skill Designer
In a chat, type
/skill-designerfollowed by what you want the skill to do, and send.Answer the follow-up questions
Answer the assistant's questions about the skill's purpose, its format, and when it should apply.
Save the draft
Ask the assistant to save the drafted skill, and confirm when it shows you the draft. You can refine it any time in the editor.
Outputs
- A saved skill, listed on the Skills surface and available in the composer as
/your-slug. - Editing a skill changes what its next invocation does. You can change the slug in the editor: the old slash command stops working and the new one starts.
