Overview

The portfolio workspace is a single place where you build portfolios by hand or securely connect a brokerage account, then track value, returns, dividends, gains, and benchmarks. You can study one portfolio at a time or switch to a combined view of the portfolios you select. This page explains what the workspace shows and how to read its headline figures. Free, Pro Lite, and Pro can view and build manual portfolios; connected brokerage accounts are available on Pro Lite and Pro.

What it shows

The workspace opens on the portfolio you set as default, or the first portfolio you own if you have not set one. The following parts make up the page.

Portfolio picker

Use the picker to switch between your portfolios, or select Combined View and choose which portfolios to include. The combined view summarizes those selected portfolios. It does not represent assets you have not included.

Header line

The header summarizes the selected portfolio in one row:

  • Total value: the current dollar worth of the portfolio.
  • Total gain: lifetime profit in dollars.
  • Total return: that same gain as a percentage.
  • Annualized return: where shown, the per-year compounded pace of the return.
  • Cash: uninvested cash, shown for hand-built portfolios only.

Section tabs

A tab strip runs across the page with ten sections: Overview, Performance, Holdings, Transactions, Realized, Dividends, Valuation, Allocations, ETFs, and Hedging. Each tab opens a focused view of that part of the portfolio.

Overview digest

The Overview tab shows a grid of summary cells, for example a positions count, dividend income, and the top sector. Select any cell to open its full tab.

Action buttons

Two actions sit near the header. AI Report generates a written portfolio report where available. Export downloads an Excel file of your holdings, transactions, and analytics.

How the headline figures are read

The header carries two numbers worth reading carefully.

Total gain combines three sources of profit: paper gains on holdings you still own, profits already locked in from shares you sold, and dividends you have received.

total gain = unrealized gain + realized gains + lifetime dividends

In this formula, unrealized gain is the paper gain on current holdings in US dollars at the latest prices, realized gains is the profit from shares already sold over the life of the portfolio in US dollars, and lifetime dividends is the dividends received over the life of the portfolio in US dollars. For example, an unrealized gain of 715,035.60 plus realized gains of 2,215,596.35 plus dividends of 232,088.54 gives a total gain of 3,162,720.49. This is a lifetime profit figure, not a time-weighted rate of return, because it adds lifetime realized gains and dividends to only the current paper gain.

Total return expresses that same lifetime profit as a share of the current invested value.

total return % = (unrealized gain + realized gains + lifetime dividends) / positions value × 100

Here positions value is the current market value of holdings only, excluding cash, in US dollars. When positions value is zero or less, the return is shown as 0. For example, 3,162,720.49 divided by 5,485,709.50, times 100, gives 57.65%. The denominator is the value of remaining holdings after sells, not the money originally invested, so this is a profit ratio rather than a deposit-weighted or time-weighted return.

These figures refresh after a recompute, which runs automatically whenever you add, edit, or delete a transaction or change settings, and on the daily data refresh. Holdings are priced with end-of-day market prices from AlphaVantage (Nasdaq quotes delivered through AlphaVantage), so the figures reflect the most recent end-of-day prices, not live intraday quotes.

Use cases

  • Check at a glance what a portfolio is worth and how much you are up.
  • Jump from the Overview digest straight into Performance, Dividends, or Holdings.
  • Switch to Combined View to review selected portfolios together.

Limitations and disclosures

Figures are end-of-day, not live, so the headline numbers move once per trading day. The return shown is a lifetime profit measure unless a different methodology label appears on screen.
