Dashboard widgets
Each Dashboard module has its own controls, figures, and timing. This page explains the widgets and how to interpret their figures. Free, Pro Lite, and Pro accounts can use the Dashboard. Linked tools follow their own access rules, and account-specific invitations appear only when relevant.
Before you begin
Make sure you have the following in place.
- You are signed in. The Dashboard is a signed-in screen, so anonymous visitors are sent to a sign-in gate first.
- Optional: to see live figures in Portfolio Summary, create a manual portfolio or securely connect your brokerage account. To learn how, see Build your first portfolio and Connect a brokerage.
Quickstart
Open the Dashboard
Sign in and go to the Dashboard. The modules load automatically.
Set the market window
In Market Overview, select a period (for example 1Y) to see how the major indices have moved over that window.
Filter the movers
In Market Movers, select a size tab (for example Small Cap) to narrow the list to companies of that size.
Sort the sectors
In Sector Performance, select a period column header to sort by it. Select it again to flip the direction.
Customize your layout
Open Customize Dashboard, turn off any module you do not use, then select Save Layout to store your choice to your account.
What it shows
The Dashboard combines the market, research, portfolio, and account modules described below.
Market Overview
A compact strip of six index funds. Each entry shows its name, current price, and a percentage return for the selected period. Hovering over an index shows a one-line description of what it tracks.
Recent Updates
Colored announcement banners (Info, Warning, Success, and Urgent) plus an expandable list of dated update notes. Each note is tagged Update, New Feature, Improvement, Bug Fix, or Release, with an optional Learn more link. The list is paginated at three items per page.
Market Movers
Two columns, Top Gainers and Top Losers. Each row shows the company logo, symbol, company name, a size badge, the percent change, and the last price. A row of tabs filters by company size, and a timestamp shows when the data was last updated.
Top Market News
Up to ten recent headlines, each with its source, a time-ago label, and the related symbol. Selecting a headline opens the original article in a new tab.
Sector Performance
A table of the 11 stock-market sectors (rows) across six time periods (columns: 1D, 1W, 1M, 3M, YTD, and 1Y). Each cell is color-shaded green for up or red for down by magnitude. Select a column header to sort, and select a sector name to open its stock page.
Latest Research
A featured lead article (image, title, author, date, and ticker tag) and up to four more compact article rows. View all opens the articles library.
Portfolio Summary
A snapshot of your default portfolio: its name, total value, today's change (amount and percent versus the previous close), cash, positions value, unrealized profit or loss (with percent), cost basis, and a donut chart of your top holdings by allocation. A securely connected brokerage account shows the institution name and the last-synced time instead of a computed daily change.
Tools and workspaces
Open research and analysis tools from one panel. Availability follows each destination's access rules. A link does not remove a plan requirement or make a coming-soon tool available.
Watchlist Snapshot
See a preview of your first watchlist with available prices and daily changes. Open the full watchlist to change its holdings or view. An empty account has a prompt to create a watchlist.
Upcoming Earnings
Read the near-term earnings list, including report dates and available estimates. Open the full calendar for a broader window and additional filters.
This Week's Earnings
Review the weekly summary, filter companies, and create a share image. The This Week's Earnings guide explains the complete view and sharing controls.
Top Holdings
Review the selected portfolio's largest holdings by value and their allocations. This is a summary of that portfolio, not a ranking of recommended investments.
Account invitations
An eligible account may see an Investing Club offer or a survey invitation. Open the invitation to review its terms before joining or responding. See Member invitation and Surveys.
Customize Dashboard
A switch for each module to show or hide it, plus Save Layout and Reset Defaults buttons. Portfolio Summary and the Customize panel are always on and cannot be hidden.
Inputs
The controls you set are listed in the following table-style summary.
- Market Overview period: 1D, 1W, 1M, or 1Y. Default is 1D.
- Market Movers size filter: All, Small Cap, Mid Cap, or Large Cap. Default is All.
- Sector Performance sort: select any period header (1D, 1W, 1M, 3M, YTD, or 1Y) to sort by it, and select again to toggle descending or ascending. Default sort is 1D, descending.
- Top Market News: shows up to ten headlines, with no user control.
- Recent Updates pagination: page and previous or next buttons, three items per page.
- Customize Dashboard switches: show or hide Global Market Overview, GNG Tools, Recent Updates, Market Movers, Watchlist Snapshot, Sector Performance, Upcoming Earnings, This Week's Earnings, Top Holdings, Latest Research & Analysis, and Top Market News. Portfolio Summary and Customize Dashboard are locked on. Save Layout stores your choices to your account, and Reset Defaults restores the default layout.
Outputs and how to read them
Use these rules to read each figure.
- Percentages: a leading plus sign and green text mean a gain, red means a loss, and a long dash means the figure is unavailable.
- Prices and dollar amounts: shown in U.S. dollars. Large portfolio numbers are abbreviated on small screens, for example $1.25M or $45.30K.
- Market Movers size badge: Large Cap is blue, Mid Cap is amber, and Small Cap is purple.
- Sector cells: a deeper green is a stronger gain, a deeper red is a steeper loss, and a neutral grey appears near zero or when a value is missing.
- Portfolio today's change: shows both a dollar amount and a percent, labeled versus the previous close.
- Unrealized profit or loss: green is a paper gain, red is a paper loss, and the smaller percent beneath it is the gain relative to cost.
How it is calculated
The math behind each figure is described in the following sections. Every figure is rounded for display.
Index and sector return for a period
This is how much an index fund or sector fund has moved over the window you choose, in percent. For the one-day window, the platform compares the current price to the prior trading day's close. For a longer window, it compares the current price to the closing price at the start of that window.
return = (current_price minus reference_close) / reference_close times 100
Let current_price represent the latest price of the fund in U.S. dollars, as of the most recent refresh. Let reference_close represent the fund's closing price at the start of the window in U.S. dollars: the prior trading day's close for 1D, or roughly 5, 21, or 63 trading days ago for 1W, 1M, and 3M, January 1 of the current year for YTD, and roughly 252 trading days ago for 1Y. The result is rounded to two decimals.
For a one-day example, with a current price of 512.40 and a previous close of 508.00, the return is (512.40 minus 508.00) / 508.00 times 100, which equals +0.87%. For a one-year example, with a current price of 512.40 and a reference close of 430.00, the return is (512.40 minus 430.00) / 430.00 times 100, which equals +19.16%.
Index and sector returns refresh on the page about every five minutes. The figures are price-only and do not add back dividends, so the true total return of a dividend-paying fund is slightly higher than shown. Longer windows use the nearest available historical close, not an exact calendar date.
Market Movers percent change
This is how far a stock has moved during the latest snapshot day relative to where it opened.
percent_change = (current_price minus open_price) / open_price times 100
Let current_price represent the snapshot's price in U.S. dollars, and let open_price represent that day's opening price in U.S. dollars. The window is a single trading day. For an example, with an open of 50.00 and a current price of 56.50, the change is 6.50, and (6.50 / 50.00) times 100 equals +13.00%.
The list shows the 20 biggest gainers and the 20 biggest losers, ranked within each size group. This is the move since the day's open for the latest available daily snapshot, not a live or trailing-24-hour figure. Rows with a zero or missing open are excluded.
Company-size category for movers
This groups each company by its total stock-market value. A company worth under $2 billion is Small Cap, from $2 billion up to $10 billion is Mid Cap, and $10 billion and above is Large Cap.
market_cap = shares_outstanding times price
Let shares_outstanding represent the count of shares the company has issued, and let price represent the current price per share in U.S. dollars. For an example, a company worth $6.3 billion is Mid Cap. Market value can be stale or missing for some tickers, in which case no badge is shown and the row still appears under All.
Portfolio today's change
This is how much your portfolio's total value moved from the previous day's value, for manual portfolios.
change_value = latest_total_value minus previous_total_value, and change_percent = (change_value / previous_total_value) times 100
Let latest_total_value and previous_total_value represent your portfolio's total value on the two most recent daily points, both in U.S. dollars. For an example, with a value of $98,000 yesterday and $100,450 today, the change is +$2,450, and (2,450 / 98,000) times 100 equals +2.50%. This figure appears only for manual portfolios with at least two days of history. A securely connected brokerage shows its last-synced time instead of a computed daily change.
Unrealized profit or loss percent
This is the paper gain or loss on your current holdings versus what you paid.
unrealized_gain_percent = (total_unrealized_gain / total_cost) times 100, where total_unrealized_gain = current_market_value minus total_cost
Let total_cost represent the total amount paid for your current holdings in U.S. dollars, and let current_market_value represent the current value of those holdings in U.S. dollars. For an example, with a cost of $40,000 and a value of $46,000, the gain is $6,000, and (6,000 / 40,000) times 100 equals +15.00%. This figure is unrealized, so it is not locked in. It excludes already-sold positions and dividends. For a securely connected brokerage, it is computed only from holdings that report a cost basis.
Top-holding allocation
This is each top holding's share of the whole portfolio, shown in the donut chart.
allocation = (holding_market_value / portfolio_total_value) times 100
Let holding_market_value represent the current value of one holding in U.S. dollars, and let portfolio_total_value represent the current value of the whole portfolio in U.S. dollars. For an example, a holding worth $12,000 in a $100,000 portfolio is 12.0%. The chart shows the top five holdings by value, so the slices do not always sum to 100%.
Time-ago and display window
News headlines show how long ago each item posted, for example 5m ago, 3h ago, or 2d ago. Recent Updates shows announcements that are active and update notes from roughly the last five days, or until their set display-until date. There is no financial math here. The time-ago label depends on the publisher's timestamp.
Data and timing
The data behind each widget, and how current it is, is summarized in the following list.
- Index, sector, and movers prices and returns: market data from AlphaVantage, which delivers Nasdaq-listed and other U.S. securities. Index and sector returns refresh on the page about every five minutes. Movers reflect the most recent daily market snapshot and show a last-updated timestamp.
- News: aggregated recent market and company headlines, newest first, de-duplicated across symbols.
- Articles: GNG's own published research.
- Portfolio: your own holdings and transactions. Manual-portfolio figures update in near-real-time when your portfolio recomputes, and a securely connected brokerage shows its last sync time.
- Recent Updates: GNG-authored platform notes, shown within their active window, which defaults to about five days.
To learn more about where the market data comes from, see Data sources.
Use cases
The widgets help in a few common situations, described in the following list.
- Switch Market Overview to 1Y to see how the major indices have done over the past year before reading a new article.
- Filter Market Movers to Small Cap to find smaller names making outsized moves.
- Sort Sector Performance by YTD to see which sectors are leading the year, then select a sector to drill into it.
- Hide modules you do not use, for example News, with Customize Dashboard, then save a cleaner layout.
Limitations and disclosures
All market figures are informational and are not recommendations to buy or sell. Market Movers reflect the move since the day's open for the latest daily snapshot, not live streaming quotes, and the widget is labeled accordingly. Index and sector returns are price-only and do not include dividends. Portfolio figures depend on your own data and on holdings that report a cost basis. Selecting through to a gated destination, for example a premium article, is governed by that destination's own access rules, not by the Dashboard.
GNG Research provides equity research and educational tools, not investment advice. Nothing on the platform is a recommendation to buy or sell any security. Do your own research and consider your circumstances before making any investment decision.
