Images and enlargements
Images and embedded research panels inside an article can be tapped to open full-screen in a lightbox, so you can inspect a chart or figure closely and then return to your place in the article. This page explains what can be enlarged, how to open and close the lightbox, and how to read an enlarged figure. Enlargement is available to every reader who can open the article, on the same terms as the article itself.
Before you begin
- Open an article you can read. Enlargement follows the article reader, so you can enlarge figures in any article you can open. For the reader, see Read an article.
What it shows
Several elements inside an article can be enlarged.
- Inline article images, shown with a caption underneath where the author added one. On hover, an image dims slightly and the pointer shows a zoom cursor, signalling that it can be enlarged.
- The hero image, which can also be enlarged.
- Embedded research panels, for example a price chart, a financials table, or an earnings panel, each carrying an expand control.
When you open one, the lightbox takes over the screen: a centered overlay with a dimmed, blurred backdrop and a clear close button in the top-right corner.
- For an image, the lightbox shows the image scaled to fit the screen, the caption underneath, and a source line where the author supplied one.
- For a panel, the lightbox re-renders the same panel at full size, with its content scrollable if it is tall.
Inputs
- Open an image: tap or select the hero image or any inline image to open it in the lightbox.
- Expand a panel: select the expand control on an embedded research panel to open it full-screen.
- Close the lightbox: select the close button, tap outside the image, or press Escape.
- Pinch to zoom: on a touch device, pinch to zoom further into an enlarged image using your device's native gesture.
Outputs and how to read them
- Enlarged image: the figure at a larger size, fit to your screen without cropping, so fine detail in a chart or table is legible.
- Caption and source: the author's caption and, where present, the stated source of the figure, shown under the enlarged image.
- Expanded panel: the same research panel you saw inline, now at full size, with any long content scrollable.
How it is calculated
Not applicable. Enlarging an image or panel changes only the display size. No figure is computed when you open the lightbox.
Data and timing
Images and their captions are part of the article and load with it. An expanded research panel shows the same data as its inline version, drawn from the platform's latest values for the symbols it covers. Where a panel reflects market prices, those prices come from AlphaVantage end-of-day data, refreshed once per trading day after the close. There is no separate refresh when you open the lightbox.
Use cases
- Enlarge a dense chart to read its axis labels and data points.
- Open a financials table full-screen to scan every row clearly.
- Inspect a figure's stated source after enlarging it.
- Expand an embedded panel to study it, then close it to continue reading.
Tier access
Image enlargement and panel expansion are available to every reader who can open the article, including Free, Pro Lite, and Pro accounts, on the same terms as the article itself. There is no separate access rule for this feature; it follows the article reader, which is open to all, as covered in Read an article. For current plans, see the table below.
Limitations and disclosures
Enlarging an image presents no new valuation or forecast, so this feature needs no separate investment-advice statement. Where an enlarged panel shows research figures, the article-level research framing applies; see Equity research, not investment advice.
