Listen to an article
Listen reads an article aloud using your device's built-in voice, so you can take in the research hands-free. You can play, pause, stop, and set the reading speed. This page explains the listen control, its speed options, what it reads, and how to use it. The control appears for readers with full access to the article, where your browser supports read-aloud.
Before you begin
- Open an article you can read in full. The listen control sits in the action row of the article, beside like, bookmark, and share. For the reader, see Read an article.
- Read-aloud is available where your browser supports it. Where it is not supported, the control does not appear.
What it shows
- A Listen control in the article's action row. Its label changes with state: "Listen" when idle, "Listening" while playing, and "Paused" when paused. While active, the current speed (for example "1x") shows beside the label.
- A small menu with Play, Pause or Resume, Stop (shown only while active), and a list of speeds.
- Speed options: 0.75x speed, 1x speed, 1.25x speed, 1.5x speed, and 2x speed. A check marks the current speed.
Inputs
- Play: start reading from the top.
- Pause and Resume: pause read-aloud and continue from where it stopped.
- Stop: end read-aloud and reset to the start.
- Speed: select 0.75x, 1x, 1.25x, 1.5x, or 2x. The default is 1x. Changing the speed continues from the current position rather than restarting.
Outputs and how to read them
- Spoken article: the article body is read aloud in order. Images, figures, captions, and any in-body promotional lines are skipped, so only the readable text is spoken.
- State label: tells you whether the reader is idle, listening, or paused, and at what speed.
How it is calculated
Not applicable. Read-aloud converts the article's text to speech on your device. No figure is computed. The speed setting multiplies the voice's reading rate: 1x is the device default, and 2x is twice as fast.
Data and timing
The voice is your device's built-in speech voice, generated on your device in real time as you listen. The text read aloud is the article body as published, with images and captions removed. No external market data is involved. Availability depends on your browser supporting read-aloud; where it does not, the control does not appear.
Use cases
- Listen to an article during a commute or while away from the screen.
- Speed up to 1.5x or 2x to get through a long piece faster.
- Slow down to 0.75x to follow a dense, technical passage.
- Pause to take a note, then resume from the same spot.
Tier access
The listen control appears for readers with full access to the article, including Free, Pro Lite, and Pro accounts; the article reader itself is open to all, as covered in Read an article. There is no separate access rule for this feature. For current plans, see the table below.
Limitations and disclosures
Read-aloud presents the same article content in spoken form and produces no new valuation or forecast, so it needs no separate investment-advice statement. The article's research framing and disclosures still apply; see Equity research, not investment advice.
