Peers and comparison

The Peers section lists the companies most similar to the one you are viewing, ranked by a 0 to 100 match score, in the sidebar. This page explains what the list shows, how to read the match score, and how the score is computed. The section is available to Free, Pro Lite, and Pro accounts.

Before you begin

What it shows

A "Peer Companies" list shows the top five peers, with a "View All Peers" dialog for the full set. Each entry carries the peer's symbol, name, industry and sector, and a GNG Peer Match Score. An info popover explains the scoring.

Inputs

The list takes no input. Select a peer to open its research page, or "View All Peers" for the full list.

Outputs and how to read them

  • Peer Match Score (0 to 100): how similar the peer is to the current company. A score of 60 or above is a strong match (green), 40 to 59 is moderate (yellow), and under 40 is a loose comparison (red).
  • Use peers to find comparable companies and to sanity-check valuation and quality against close competitors.

How it is calculated

The Peer Match Score measures how alike two companies are by comparing their business descriptions, market cap, sector, and industry, then scoring the closeness from 0 to 100.

match score = similarity(business descriptions) blended with closeness of market cap, sector, and industry, scaled 0 to 100

In this calculation, the inputs are the company's description, market cap, sector, and industry, and the output is a 0 to 100 similarity score; higher means a closer match. The description similarity is a text comparison, blended with a hybrid ranking that also weighs market cap, sector, and industry. For example, a peer that shares the same industry, a comparable market cap, and a closely related business description scores in the 60s or higher (a strong match), while a same-sector but different-business company scores in the 40s. The similarity is based on descriptive and size attributes, not on financial performance, so a close match is not an endorsement.

Data and timing

The list is built from AlphaVantage company profiles and descriptions. The peer rankings refresh weekly, not daily.

Use cases

  • Build a comparison set for a company.
  • Discover competitors you had not considered.
  • Move between related names without searching by hand.

Limitations and disclosures

The score reflects descriptive and size attributes, not financial performance, so a close match is not an endorsement, and the rankings refresh weekly. This section is descriptive, so no disclosure is required here.
