Quote and header
The header strip is the top row of a company's research page. It shows the company's identity, its current price, today's move, its market cap, and whether the market is open. This page explains what the strip shows, how to read each figure, and how the day change and market cap are computed. The header is available to Free, Pro Lite, and Pro accounts.
Before you begin
- Sign in and open a company page by ticker. For the steps, see Look up a company.
- Know that one button in the header, the AI Company Report, requires the Pro plan. The rest of the header is available to every plan.
Quickstart
Open a company page
Open a company by ticker, for example /stock/AAPL.
Read the price and move
Read the current price and the day's dollar and percent change. Green means up on the day, red means down.
Check the market status
Look for the Live indicator during market hours, or a "last updated" timestamp when the market is closed.
What it shows
- The company logo, name, ticker, and exchange.
- Sector and industry labels.
- The current price, the day's dollar change, and the percent change (green up, red down).
- Market cap.
- A Live indicator during market hours, and a "last updated" timestamp otherwise.
- Action buttons: share, Add to Watchlist, and, for Pro accounts, the AI Company Report button.
Inputs
The header takes no input. Everything is driven by the ticker in the address.
Outputs and how to read them
- Current price: the latest trade price. During market hours it can update live; outside market hours it shows the most recent close with a timestamp.
- Day change and percent change: how far the price has moved versus the prior close. A positive, green value means the stock is up on the day.
- Market cap: the total market value of the company's shares, computed below.
- Live badge: shown only Monday to Friday during trading hours (regular hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, or 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time when extended hours are enabled).
How it is calculated
Two figures in the header are computed: the day's percent change and the market cap.
Percent change for the day
The day's percent change tells you how much the price moved today versus yesterday's close, as a percentage.
percent change = (current price − previous close) / previous close × 100
In this formula, current price is the latest price in US dollars, previous close is the prior session's closing price in US dollars, and the window is one trading day. For example, a current price of 182.50 against a previous close of 178.00 gives (182.50 minus 178.00) divided by 178.00, times 100, which is plus 2.53%. Outside market hours the current price is the last close, so the day change reflects the most recent completed session, not real-time movement.
Market cap
Market cap is the company's total share-market value.
market cap = share price × shares outstanding
Here share price is the current price in US dollars, shares outstanding is the count of shares, and the window is the latest available figures. For example, 182.50 times 15,300,000,000 shares is about 2.79 trillion, shown as $2.79T. Shares outstanding update only when new filings arrive, so market cap can lag a recent buyback or share issuance by a reporting period.
Data and timing
The price is delivered through AlphaVantage from Nasdaq. Company identity and shares outstanding come from AlphaVantage and from public filings sourced through EDGAR. The price can be live intraday, while company identity and market cap refresh daily after the close.
Use cases
- Confirm you are on the right company.
- Check today's move at a glance.
- Grab the current price as your reference point before reading the fair-value panel.
Limitations and disclosures
Outside market hours the price is the last close, so the day change reflects the last completed session. Market cap can lag a recent buyback or issuance until the next filing. The quote itself is descriptive data, so no disclosure is required for this section.
