Notifications

The Notifications screen is your in-app inbox of alerts, together with the controls that decide which alerts reach you in the app and by email. From here you read and clear your inbox, follow your favorite authors, subscribe to trade alerts from GNG model portfolios, and choose what arrives by email. This page documents every notification type, where to manage it, whether it is delivered in the app or by email, and how to turn each one on or off. The screen is open to every signed-in member on Free, Pro Lite, and Pro.

Before you begin

  • Sign in to your account. The Notifications screen is only available to signed-in members.
  • Open the Notifications screen at gngresearch.com/notifications.
  • To receive any alert by email, turn on the master email switch first. Email-specific switches have no effect while the master switch is off. See the gating rule under How email delivery works.

The settings sit in the left rail on a wide screen. On a phone or tablet, they open from a settings dialog. The rail also shows your avatar, name, plan name, status, and your unread count.

What it shows

The screen has two parts: an inbox and a settings stack.

  • The inbox lists your notifications grouped by date, with a type filter, an unread count, a Mark all read action, and a load-more paging control.
  • The settings stack holds the preference sections: Email Delivery, Reply Activity, Model Portfolio Trades, Follow Authors, and, for authors only, Comment Activity.

Most notification types have two independent sides: an in-app side that places a card in your inbox, and an email side that sends the same alert to your inbox by email. The two sides are set separately. The email side of every type is also subject to one master email switch, described below.

Read and clear your inbox

  1. Open the inbox

Go to gngresearch.com/notifications. Your notifications appear grouped by date, with an unread count at the top.

  2. Filter by type

Use the type filter to show only one kind of notification. The default is All.

  3. Open a notification

Select a notification card to mark it read and open the linked item, such as a portfolio, an article, a reply, or a support thread.

  4. Clear everything

Select Mark all read to clear the unread count in one action. Use the paging control to load more if your history is long.

How email delivery works

Email delivery is controlled by one master switch in the Email Delivery section, named All Email Notifications.

  • The master switch is off by default. While it is off, every email-specific toggle on the screen is disabled, and no notification of any type is sent to you by email, regardless of its individual setting.
  • Turn the master switch on to enable the email side of any type. Each type still has its own email toggle that you set independently.
  • In-app notifications are never affected by the master email switch. You always receive in-app cards for the types you have turned on, even with all email off.

To turn email delivery on:

  1. Open Email Delivery

In the settings stack, find the Email Delivery section.

  2. Turn on the master switch

Set All Email Notifications to on. The email-specific toggles in the other sections become available.

  3. Set each email type

Turn on the email side of each type you want, such as Email for replies or the email toggle in Comment Activity.

To stop all email while keeping your in-app inbox, turn the master switch off. Your individual email toggles keep their saved positions and take effect again the next time the master switch is on.

Notification types

The following sections list every notification type, where to manage it, whether it is in-app, by email, or both, its default state, and how to turn it on or off.

Support message emails

  • What it is: an email when support sends you a message, for example a reply to a request you raised.
  • Delivery: email only.
  • Where to manage it: the Email Delivery section, as Support Message Emails.
  • Default: on, but only effective when the master All Email Notifications switch is on.
  • Turn it on or off: set the Support Message Emails toggle. Because it is an email type, it has no effect while the master switch is off.

Reply alerts

  • What it is: an alert when someone replies to a comment you posted.
  • Delivery: in-app and email, set separately.
  • Where to manage it: the Reply Activity section.
  • Defaults: the in-app toggle (Reply notifications) is on; the email toggle (Email for replies) is off.
  • Turn the in-app side on or off: set Reply notifications. This controls the card in your inbox.
  • Turn the email side on or off: set Email for replies. This sends the reply alert to your email, and it is gated by the master email switch.

Model portfolio trade alerts

  • What it is: a trade alert each time a GNG model portfolio you subscribe to places a trade.
  • Delivery: in-app, with one switch per available model portfolio.
  • Where to manage it: the Model Portfolio Trades section.
  • Default: off for every model portfolio until you subscribe.
  • Turn it on or off: set the per-portfolio switch for each model portfolio you want to track. Turning it on subscribes you to that portfolio's trade alerts; turning it off unsubscribes you.

Author publish alerts

  • What it is: an alert when an author you follow publishes new work.
  • Delivery: in-app.
  • Where to manage it: the Follow Authors section.
  • Default: you follow no authors until you opt in.
  • Turn it on or off: use Follow All Authors to follow every author at once, or set the per-author switches to follow specific authors. You can follow all, follow none, or follow some.

Article comment alerts (authors only)

  • What it is: an alert when readers comment on work you published. This section appears only if you are an author.
  • Delivery: in-app and email, set separately.
  • Where to manage it: the Comment Activity section.
  • Defaults: the in-app toggle is on; the email toggle is off.
  • Turn the in-app side on or off: set the in-app comment toggle. This controls the card in your inbox.
  • Turn the email side on or off: set the email comment toggle. It is gated by the master email switch.

Set your notification preferences

Use the following procedure to set the preferences in one pass. Each change saves immediately.

  1. Turn email delivery on or off

In Email Delivery, set the master All Email Notifications switch. It is off by default. While it is off, every email-specific toggle is disabled. Support Message Emails sits here too and is on by default, but only takes effect when the master switch is on.

  2. Choose reply alerts

In Reply Activity, keep Reply notifications on to be alerted in the app when someone replies to a comment you posted. Turn on Email for replies if you also want those by email. The in-app switch is on by default; the email switch is off by default and is gated by the master switch.

  3. Subscribe to model-portfolio trades

In Model Portfolio Trades, turn on the per-portfolio switch for any model portfolio you want to track. You then receive a trade alert whenever that portfolio trades. Each portfolio is off until you subscribe.

  4. Follow authors

In Follow Authors, use Follow All Authors or the per-author switches to be notified when an author publishes. Follow all, follow none, or follow some.

  5. Set comment alerts (authors only)

If you are an author, the Comment Activity section lets you choose in-app and email alerts when readers comment on your published work. The in-app switch is on by default; the email switch is off by default and is gated by the master switch.

Outputs and how to read them

Read the indicators on the Notifications screen as follows.

  • Unread count: how many notifications you have not yet opened.
  • Notification card: a dated alert. Selecting it marks it read and takes you to the related portfolio, article, reply, or support thread.
  • Toggle state: on means you receive that alert. A greyed-out email toggle means the master email switch is off, so no email of that type is sent regardless of the individual setting.

Data and timing

Alerts arrive as the underlying events happen: a model portfolio places a trade, an author you follow publishes, someone replies to your comment, or support messages you. Preference changes save immediately. Model-portfolio trade alerts relate to GNG model portfolios, whose market data is sourced from AlphaVantage (with Nasdaq quotes delivered through AlphaVantage). No market figure is shown on this screen itself.

Use cases

  • A member follows two analysts and turns on author alerts so they never miss new research.
  • A member subscribes to a specific model portfolio to get an alert each time it trades.
  • Someone who dislikes email keeps the master switch off and relies on the in-app inbox.
  • An author turns on email for reader comments so they can respond promptly.

Limitations and disclosures

Author-only sections appear only for members who are authors. The email side of every type depends on the master All Email Notifications switch, so an email toggle that looks on still sends nothing while the master switch is off. Model-portfolio trade alerts point to GNG model portfolios; that content carries its own not-investment-advice framing, so the preferences screen does not repeat it.
