Add data
Data steps give a workflow the information it needs before it analyzes or saves a result. Choose a source, then connect its result to later steps. Free, Pro Lite, and Pro can add data steps within their workflow limits.
Before you begin
- Open a workflow in the editor.
- Create any portfolio or watchlist you want to select.
- Confirm that you can access the research content you intend to use.
Quickstart
- Add a step under Add data.
- Select the step to configure its source.
- Choose tickers, a portfolio, a watchlist, or another input described below.
- Connect it to an analysis or output step.
- Select Test and inspect the data step's Output.
What it shows
| Step | Information it supplies |
|---|---|
| Portfolio snapshot | A selected portfolio's holdings, weights, day change, and totals. |
| Ticker quote | Quotes, company information, and key ratios for selected securities. |
| GNG ratings | Available valuation, safety, quality, GNG Quant, and Wall Street information. |
| News feed | Recent news and sentiment for selected securities. |
| Watchlist contents | Symbols, quotes, and day moves from your selected sources. |
| GNG articles | Available GNG research for the chosen scope and period. |
| User memories | AI Console memories relevant to your written query. |
| Previous run | The most recent successful Saved report from a successful run of this workflow. |
Inputs
Tickers, portfolios, and watchlists
Ticker quote, GNG ratings, News feed, and Watchlist contents let you combine Tickers, Portfolios, and Watchlists. Enter tickers separated by commas and select the saved resources you want. The combined selection avoids repeating the same ticker.
Portfolio snapshot selects one portfolio. Use it when the analysis needs your holding sizes and portfolio totals, not only the list of securities.
News and articles
News feed adds Max items to its source selection.
For GNG articles, choose Scope and Window. A selected-security scope exposes the same ticker, portfolio, and watchlist choices. A custom window exposes From and To. Max articles sets how much research to return within the allowed range.
Memories and previous output
Enter a Memory query in User memories, such as your income preferences or research criteria. Previous run has no configuration. It supplies the most recent successful Saved report from a successful run of this workflow.
If no qualifying report exists, the result is empty. A successful email, chart, file, or AI-only run does not provide a previous report. Include Saved report in the workflow if later runs need this comparison source.
Outputs and how to read them
Inspect the selected step in a test run to see the information actually returned. A result can contain several values or a list of items. Select the whole result when later analysis needs the full context, or choose a specific field for a comparison or chart.
Do not interpret missing information as zero. An empty result can mean no matching news, no available research, or no successful Saved report from a successful run.
Data and timing
Each data step reads its inputs when it runs. Saving a workflow does not freeze the selected portfolio or watchlist. Market data, ratings, articles, and memories have different update times.
Data steps do not add an AI charge by themselves. An AI step that analyzes their results uses GNG credits.
Use cases
- Combine portfolio holdings with news before writing a research brief.
- Use a memory query to bring your stated preferences into analysis.
- Compare current research with the workflow's previous successful Saved report.
Limitations and disclosures
An AI step receives directly connected data by default. If a condition sits between the source and the AI step, select the earlier data through Choose specific fields. The condition's yes/no result alone does not contain the original research.
GNG Research provides equity research and educational tools, not investment advice. Nothing on the platform is a recommendation to buy or sell any security. Do your own research and consider your circumstances before making any investment decision.
